Welcome

Welcome. This blog grows from a new media class assignment as part of my final steps to being ABD. Is that like saying "almost almost" ready to work on my dissertation?

With the image here, I'd like to introduce my interest in American themes, however broad a topic that may be. It's a photo of the Tetons I took last summer, a view I love and return to often. For me, pictures like this speak rhetorical possibilities, revealing the relationship between American optimism, sweeping landscape vistas, power, nature, and nationalism.

I love how the clouds, the mountains, and the trees complement one another in movement and shape. The thing is, the shot was mostly luck, and that leaves me with something think about. How much of composition is serendipitous?

Nice image Beth. I spent my freshman year in college in Rexburg, ID and had a similar view. It's still breath taking!

Nice intro to your blog... and a nice image to consider. Serendipity is an interesting force in composition. Ideally, we learn theory and composition/creation skills so that we can produce what we intend... BUT, I believe we should be open to "happy accidents."

It's all well and good to get to the place (or to produce what) you intended. Past artistic endeavors (not to mention a few undergrad college road trips) have clearly taught me that unexpected diversions, detours, or "plans B" have been worth it.

I love the title of your blog too (I'm a bit jealous!)... the play on "tectonics" (shifting plates, changes, etc.) and other meanings of "tonic" as in soothing the soul... and, maybe I'm thinking about more "spirited" tonics as well (Did someone say Tap House?).
